Although this colliery, its processing plant and the old power station are now closed, most of the housing and service departments remain. When No.s 2 and 3 Collieries were developed, accommodation was built closer to these shafts to reduce travelling distances to work. As a result, Hwange today consists of a collection of villages and townships whose main town centre is adjacent to the old No. 1 Colliery, at the edge of the coalfield

Services normally run by an urban council are provided by the Company through its Estates Department.Outside of the Company’s domain, but very much a part of the Hwange community, are the Government departments and parastatals. The District Administrator and the Magistrate are resident in Hwange, together with the Police, Army and Posts and Telecommunications Corporation. The Hwange Power Station is run by the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority and employs a large staff complement

social_resp3The National Railways of Zimbabwe have been in Hwange since the beginning of the century and have their own township adjacent to No. 1 Colliery. Many Government and parastatal workers live on Baobab Hill to the north of the Baobab Hotel.

The commercial sector of Hwange provides a variety of light industries to support the community. The shopping facilities provide most of the necessities and some of the luxuries. There are also banks, post offices and service stations. Education is provided by eight junior and two secondary schoolsHwange is renowned for its recreational facilities. The town caters for football, rugby, tennis, swimming, golf, bowls, hockey, squash, darts, badminton, cricket and horse riding. For the less energetic there is a Dramatic Society and a well-stocked library. Lions, Round Table and M.O.T.H.S. all have their own dens or halls.The Zambezi to the North provides some of the best river fishing in Zimbabwe where The HWANGE Angling and Boating Club has accommodation facilities. The world famous Victoria Falls is only 100 kilometres to the northwest

Besides the services and facilities provided for the urban community, HWANGE Colliery is also conscious of its responsibilities to people living in the surrounding communal lands

Watering points have been established along the 48 km pipeline that brings water from the Zambezi river to the Company’s operations in Hwange, providing access to potable water to thousands of villagers along the route.Boreholes have also been drilled for communities living along the Deka river to provide them with an alternative source of clean drinking water.
